PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Claimant vs. the Gauntlet Runner

Miss Honeycomb and Captain Khumalo were on the job when they commentated on a race that’s sure to be remembered as one of the greats: Solo Magubane vs. Jim Kieck.

It was clear right off the line that each had something to prove as each vied for the lead position in the early laps. While Jim managed to capture the coveted 1st place spot in the 3rd lap, it became clear as the race went on that Solo allowed him to take it.

As the race went into the later laps, Solo could be seen navigating the corners very carefully, maintaining his draft of Jim while Jim tried to block. By the time the 10th lap came around, Solo proved his experience when he slingshot around Jim avoiding his power-boost altogether.

While Jim tried to use his power-boost once losing the lead in the final lap, it was in vain as Solo took the lap and the victory.

In the post-race assessment, Captain Khumalo noted that Jim lost the race because he couldn’t seem to adapt from having faced ferocious drivers in King Kloof and Mandla to a smoother, patient driver in Solo. If he had, Jim could have maintained his lead.

Miss Honeycomb indicated that while this lapse in preparing resulted in Jim losing this race, Jim’s familiarity with King Kloof’s style would definitely serve him well at the YEAR END BASH.
